On 5 July 2022, The Crown Estate announced the areas (see below) that may be developed for floating wind in the Celtic Sea, described as ‘a region rich in natural resources, including world-class wind resource that can be developed with floating turbines’.
Morwind intends to compete for rights to areas which will be offered to the market via a competitive tender, to be launched in mid-2023. Large, 1GW-scale projects, which may be developed in a phased or ‘stepping stone’ approach; will be part of the tender.
The plan is for these areas, in total, to deliver 4GW of floating offshore wind power by 2035 – kick-starting industry in the region and providing power to almost four million homes.
Looking ahead to the future, the Celtic Sea has the economic potential to accommodate up to an additional 20GW of floating offshore wind capacity by 2045.
